  • A SELECTION OF GUIDED MULTI DAY REVIEWS

Fantastic bespoke 4WD tour. We had a 3 day tour with Del. Travelled with my Father and his good mate both in their late 70s. Del really went out of his way to taylor the tour to our needs. We all had a great time. This part of NZ is really beautiful and interesting. Lots of little surprises along the way. Brought back a lot of memories for my dad and our friend who both grew up in this area. Del has been doing this for a long time, we always felt looked after and safe. Thanks Del. Auckland

Del was great to deal with right from first contact and we appreciated his guidance in preparing for the day. He is easy to get on with and made sure we had a great day.

Our trip meant that we experienced un-seasonal snow in April and we appreciated his expertise, local knowledge of the area and weather conditions.

Thoroughly enjoyed another aspect of the Central Otago landscape and we look forward to being able to join him again in the very near future. Christchurch

If, when you visit New Zealand, Queenstown is a must, then Skippers Canyon is even more of a must - and without the shadow of a doubt the biggest "must" of all when choosing your tour guide is 4WD EXPEDITIONS. Myself (82) and my 76 year old wife were advised by our Kiwi son-in-law not to miss this this experience. How right he was. Time spent on reconnaissance they say is seldom wasted - and ours led us to choose 4WD EXPEDITIONS and Del as our guide. It turned out be be an inspired and rewarding choice. On the dot of 08.00 he arrived at our hotel in a spotless and extremely comfortable Land Rover Discovery. His first task was to reassure my wife, who suffers from vertigo and has a deep seated fear of heights and was on the point of pulling out at the last minute. Reassured by Del that everything would be alright she climbed into the back seat of the Discovery, still not entirely convinced but hoping for the best. What followed was a masterpiece of skilful driving and a fascinating commentary on the geology and history of the area; clearly the result of a genuine interest and much research. The scenery is jaw dropping - the drop-offs even more so but my wife's fears evaporated as she, like myself, was just blown away by the experience. As Del said, no matter how many times you make the trip you could never tire of what Skippers Canyon has to offer. We stopped to admire the views at several memorable spots and highlighted by our mid-morning tea break at what was arguably the most spectacular of the lot; with a view across the valley to what was a goldmining settlement and the beautifully restored local school. In fact "tea break" doesn't to justice to what was on offer. tea, coffee, chocolate, cookies and cakes; a veritable feast. This is most definitely not the usual tour where you are just lumped in as part of a group. Instead you are given a personal tour by a highly professional and skilful guide with a profound knowledge of the area, and delivered with humour. We spent almost two months in New Zealand, visiting both the North and South Islands. Skippers Canyon with Del was unquestionably the highlight. Excellent value for money and not on any account to be missed.

    Ian Ward-Brown , Oxfordshire, 2020.

Excellent 3 days. Excellent guide. (Thank you Del). Views magnificent. Tracks very good. Would do it all again. Alan - Auckland

What a fantastic experience going up the skippers road canyon with Del, absolutely amazing landscape and Del's your man for very entertaining stories and wealth of knowledge on the history of the area.

Lovely comfortable vehicle. By far the best trip we have done in New Zealand. Highly recommended.

    Kath

We spend a lot of time in Queenstown and have done many things here but our trip with Del would have to be one of Iif not the best activity we've done. Not only was skippers canyon such an incredible place to visit, Del was an awesome host, a genuine kiwi who was really informative about skippers and Queenstown in general and also very funny.

I highly recommend 4wd expeditions to anyone visiting Queenstown we are definitely going to do another trip with them. Auckland

Very good expedition. Well guided and some great places were seen. Del was very good and

    informative. Bob - Ashburton

Awesome day out with Del our guide. Just what we wanted, away from the crowds, wonderful scenery, and an actual kiwi local with a great sense of humor.

Starting in Queenstown Del picked us up in a luxury 4 wheel drive and we headed into the mountains for a day of exploring. I can highly recommend this company, very professional, fun and informative. England

BIG SKY

DURATION - Three Days

Three days of wonderfully diverse four wheel driving while exploring Central Otago. Drive over high country passes, through remote arid valleys, visit huge quartz seams and charming remote inns.

DAY ONE | OLD MAN RANGE - KOPUWAI

Todays adventure takes us into the Kopuwai Conservation area, up onto the Old Man and Old Women Ranges. From Cromwell we head through the old 1860s gold mining township of Bannockburn, up and over Duffers Saddle on the Nevis Road. We visit the impressive rock tors with extensive views over Lake Dunstan and the upper Nevis Valley. From Duffers Saddle, we head east up and over the Old Woman and the Old Man Ranges (Kopuwai Conservation Area), climbing to 1700 metres. From here, we drive to the Obelisk and its impressive views over Alexandra and Central Otago.  Accommodation options include historic Clyde, Alexandra and historic Ophir.

DAY TWO | POOLBURN & SERPENTINE (to old church)

Leaving Clyde, we head off to explore the Poolburn Reservoir and parts of the Serpentine Track (the location of one of New Zealand's most remote churches). Built in the early 1930s for irrigation and a great depression employment initiative, the Poolburn Reservoir and its striking scenery has been popularised by being used as a location in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. We finish the day in Alexandra and Clyde.

DAY THREE | NASEBY AND OTEAKE

Nestled under the Hawkdun Range, the small 1860s village of Naseby is now home to only 120 people. It’s hard to believe it was once home to 4000 miners, 18 stores, 14 hotels, two butchers and a hospital. From Naseby we climb up the side of Mt Buster, entering the Oteake conservation area and onto the Keyburn gold diggings. We have ample time to explore the extensive exposed quartz reefs and workings. From here we traverse this remarkable range and make our way back to Naseby. Accommodation options include a stay at the unique 1862 Danseys Pass Coach Inn, The Royal or The Ancient Briton (both 1863) in Naseby.
