EXPEDITION DESCRIPTION

 

Experience Milford Sound with 4WD Expeditions. We offer an exciting back country road alternative to Te Anau from Queenstown. Cruise across Lake Wakatipu aboard the 1912 Steamship T.S.S. Earnslaw to Walter Peak sheep station where our guide meets you. From Walter Peak explore the beautiful and remote Von Valley and Mavora Lakes in our luxury 4x4 vehicle. Enjoy taking your time to experience the majesty of this remote location - take a walk, enjoy numerous photographic opportunities or explore further by 4x4. Following this we head on to Te Anau and Milford Sound. A wonderful 2-3 day experience off the beaten track

 

 

 

ITINERARY ONE DAY TOUR

 

Includes T.S.S Earnslaw, Walter Peak sheep station, Von Valley, Mavora Lakes, Te Anau, Milford Sound, Fiordland National Park

 

DAY ONE | Queenstown, Mavora Lakes, Te Anau

 

Clients check in at the Queenstown Real Journeys office at 9:30 am for the 10 am steamship ride across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak sheep station.

Our guide will meet you off the boat for the 4x4 vehicle journey on the gravel road through the remote Von Valley to the Mavora Lakes.

Once at the Mavora Lakes there is plenty of time to soak in the stunning views, peace and quiet of the area. After a gourmet lunch options include -

 

  • 1.5 hour lakeside & forest walk
  • 4x4 further up the shore of the North Mavora Lake
  • photography
  • find the Lord of the Rings location site
  • or just relax with a cuppa

 

After leaving the Mavora Lakes, we head to Te Anau for the night. Optional tour to the Te Anau glow worm caves can be arranged for this night.

 

 

DAY TWO | Te Anau, Milford Sound, Te Anau

 

From Te Anau we travel into Fiordland National Park, through the stunning Eglinton, Hollyford and Cleddau valleys. We will stop along the road at the famous Mirror Lakes, Hollyford Valley view point, Homer Tunnel and the Chasm. Once at Milford Sound, clients board the cruise boat for their journey out through the fiord. After the cruise options include -

 

  • returning back to Te Anau or Queenstown for the night by vehicle
  • fly back to Queenstown via plane or helicopter
  • add optional day three with off road driving back to Queenstown

 

 

DAY THREE | OPTIONAL Queenstown via alternate 4x4 tracks

 

This day is optional and for those who want to experience another day of exploring through some very different South Island landscapes. This day requires clients to over night in Te Anau after their Milford Sound cruise.

From Te Anau we head by 4x4 back towards Queenstown via one of two routes

 

  • Nevis Valley road coming out at Cromwell
  • Waikaia Bush road coming out at Alexandra

 

Both roads are 4wd tracks following old 1860s gold mining routes with the Waikaia Bush road being the most challenging. Getting back to Queenstown will take 1 hour from Cromwell and 1.5 hours from Alexandra

Price includes guide plus vehicle, morning tea and lunch. Additional costs include Steamship tickets, accommodation in Te Anau or Milford, breakfasts, Te Anau glow worm caves, Milford Sound boat cruise, helicopter or fixed wing aircraft back to Queenstown.
