5 DAY ADVENTURE
DESCRIPTION
From high country passes to remote arid valleys, huge quartz seams and charming remote inns. This expedition is as magical as it gets. Five days of wonderfully diverse four wheel driving while exploring Central Otago history, characters and scenery. To cater for differing budgets, accommodation and food is not included in tour prices. Clients have the option to stay at lodges, hotels, motels, pubs and motor camps on this tour.
ITINERARY
Five days (plus meeting day) and five nights.
MEETING DAY | Cromwell 5pm onwards
All participants to meet in Cromwell for a compulsory logistics & safety talk @ 5:30pm. Vehicles will be inspected and gear lists checked off.
This night provides a good chance for meet and greet, and sort out any last minute requirements.
DAY ONE | Old Man and Old Woman Range
Starting in Cromwell, we head through the old 1860s gold mining township of Bannockburn, up and over Duffers Saddle on the Nevis Road. We visit the impressive rock tors with extensive views over Lake Dunstan and the upper Nevis valley. From Duffers Saddle, we head east up and over the Old Woman and the Old Man Ranges (Kopuwai Conservation Area), climbing to 1700 metres. From here we drive to the Obelisk and its impressive views over Alexandra and Central Otago. We descend to Alexandra and Ophir for the night.
DAY TWO | Poolburn and Serpentine
Leaving Ophir, we head off to explore the Poolburn Reservoir and parts of the Serpentine Track (the location of one of New Zealand's most remote churches). Built in the early 1930s for irrigation and a great depression employment initiative, the Poolburn Reservoir and its striking scenery has been popularised by being used as a location in the Lord of the Rings film trilogy. We finish the day in Naseby.
DAY THREE | Naseby and Oteake
Nestled under the Hawkdun Range, the small 1860s village of Naseby is now home to only 120 people. It’s hard to believe it was once home to 4000 miners, 18 stores, 14 hotels, two butchers and a hospital. From Naseby we climb up the side of Mt Buster, entering the Oteake conservation area and onto the Keyburn gold diggings. We have ample time to explore the extensive exposed quartz reefs and workings. From here we traverse this remarkable range and make our way back to Naseby. Accommodation options include a stay at the unique 1862 Dansey Pass Coach Inn.
DAY FOUR | Danseys Pass and Omarama
With an early start we head up and over the alpine track of Danseys Pass, crossing the Kakanui Range from Central Otago to North Otago. Following up the Waitaki Valley we pass Kurow making a stop at Benmore dam. We lunch at Omarama, refuel and head back into the hills. Crossing over the Omarama Saddle with its views towards Mt Aoraki / Cook, we follow the Manuhererika River back into Central Otago.
DAY FIVE | St Bathans and Bendigo
The last day begins with a visit to St Bathans and the Vulcan Hotel. Leaving Central Otago we cross over the Dunstan Range to Lake Dunstan and commanding views over the Pisa Range. From here we explore the Bendigo area and its extensive gold field remnants. The tour finishes mid afternoon, just 15 minutes north of Cromwell, and an hour east of Queenstown.

SOUTHERN GOLD TRAIL
3 DAY EXPEDITION | NEW 2018 ITINERARY
EXPEDITION DESCRIPTION | NEW 2018 ITINERARY
This is the ultimate three day Gold Trail and High Country Sheep Station Expedition exploring the magnificent Queenstown region.
On this tour we return to Queenstown each afternoon, so you can stay at your own selected accommodation and enjoy Queenstown's shopping, restaurants and night life.
Skippers Canyon was the scene of the frenzied 1862 gold rush on the Shotover River. We begin by negotiating the infamous 1889 Skippers Canyon Road, literally carved into the mountain sides along the Shotover River. We explore the canyon and its secrets, past and present.
From Skippers Canyon this expedition travels through to a wonderful, very private high country sheep station. We spend the next day exploring this 33,000 acre farm with plenty of time to soak in the views, stretch the legs, or just relax at the beautifully situated lodge.
Leaving the sheep station, we head west and start travelling through the Kopuwai Conservation area, with stunning Central Otago vistas, varied history, magnificent rock tors and more.
With a guaranteed variety of tracks, diverse stunning scenery, local area commentary, authentic high country food and legendary experiences this expedition brings it all together.
ITINERARY THREE DAY TAG ALONG TOUR
Includes Skippers Canyon, a private high country sheep station and the Old Woman and Old Man Range.
DAY ONE | Queenstown and Skippers Canyon
Meet at Skippers turn off up Coronet Peak Road for safety briefing.
Skippers Canyon provides magnificent high country vistas, the powerful Shotover River and incredible gold mining history and relics. Visit the restored 1879 Skippers School House, legendary 1901 Skippers Bridge, and follow up the mighty Shotover River. Your guide has travelled this road literally thousands of times, and we will have plenty of time to share stories and interpretation of the area's rich gold mining endeavours.
After we come back down Coronet Peak we head back to Queenstown.
DAY TWO | Private high country sheep station
This morning we set off into an impressive working high country sheep station which boasts a diverse range of terrain including glacial carved valleys, crystal clear rivers, ancient beech forest, sweeping tussock grasslands, steep bluffs and mountains. The station is incredibly rich in gold mining history, with an estimated 3000 gold miners in the area during the 1862 gold rush. This sheep farm is also home to New Zealand’s famous merino sheep. Plenty of time is allowed to soak in the mountains, river, and raw scenery. We head out to a remote hut for lunch before returning to Queenstown. Time has been allowed to go walking, gold panning or just chill out.
DAY THREE | Kopuwai Conservation area, Old Woman / Old Man Range
After another hearty Queenstown breakfast we set off west following the Kawarau Gorge to Cromwell and Bannockburn. After a fuel and coffee stop we climb up towards Duffers Saddle on the Nevis Road.
Leaving the Nevis Road we start climbing again up to 1740m.
Traversing the mountain tops with Lake Dunstan behind us, the Nevis Valley, Hector Mountains and The Remarkables on one side, and Central Otago and Alexandra on the other side, the views are simply stunning. Plenty of time is allowed to investigate the amazing rock tors and soak in the vistas of this memorable region.

ITINERARY OPTIONS
OPTION ONE | Queenstown and Skippers Canyon
Skippers Canyon provides magnificent high country vistas, the powerful Shotover River and incredible gold mining history and relics. Visit the restored 1879 Skippers School House, legendary 1901 Skippers Bridge, and follow up the mighty Shotover River. Your guide has travelled this road literally thousands of times, and we will have plenty of time to share stories and interpretation of the area's rich gold mining endeavours.
OPTION TWO | Kopuwai Conservation area, Old Woman / Old Man Range
Take a journey west following the Kawarau Gorge to Cromwell and Bannockburn. Head up the Cromwell end of the Nevis Road and climb to 1740m. Traverse the mountain tops with Lake Dunstan behind us, the Nevis Valley, Hector Mountains and The Remarkables on one side, and Central Otago and Alexandra on the other side - the views are simply stunning! Plenty of time is allowed to investigate the amazing rock tors and soak in the vistas of this memorable region before heading back to your chosen accommodation (consider Clyde, Cromwell, Queenstown, Arrowtown).
OPTION THREE | Nevis Valley
Leaving Queenstown, we head south following Lake Wakatipu to the small township of Garston. From here we gain altitude and climb up into the tussock country at the southern end of the Hector Mountains over the Nokomai Saddle. We then descend into the southern Nevis Valley to follow the Nevis River, the country opening out to a wide, barren, typical Otago high country valley. After numerous small fords and creek crossings, gold mining remnants including sluicing ponds, pipework and abandoned dwellings begin to litter the landscape. Following lunch we leave the valley and river behind to climb up and over Duffers Saddle. We will spend time amongst the rock tors and enjoy the magnificent views over Lake Dunstan, Cromwell and the Pisa Range. Next, we drive down to the old 1858 township of Bannockburn where we stop at the local pub for a dust quenching drink and proceed to your chosen accommodation (consider Cromwell, Clyde, Queenstown, Arrowtown).
OPTION FOUR | Poolburn and Serpentine
Leaving Queenstown, we head off to explore Central Otago's Poolburn Reservoir and parts of the Serpentine Track (the location of one of New Zealand's most remote churches). Built in the early 1930s for irrigation, the Poolburn Reservoir was a great depression employment initiative and its striking scenery has been popularised more recently as a filming location for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Consider the following accommodation options: Ophir, Alexandra, Clyde.
OPTION FIVE | Naseby and Oteake Conservation Area
Nestled under the Hawkdun Range, the small 1860s village of Naseby is now home to only 120 people - it’s hard to believe it was once home to 4000 miners, 18 stores, 14 hotels, two butchers and a hospital! From Naseby we climb up the side of Mt Buster, enter the Oteake conservation area and travel on to the Keyburn gold diggings. We have ample time to explore the extensive exposed quartz reefs and workings. The rest of the day is spent traversing this remarkable range before heading back to your accommodation (consider Naseby, St Bathans, Danseys Pass).
OPTION SIX | Danseys Pass and Omarama Saddle
Starting early in the day, we head up and over Danseys Pass, crossing the Kakanui Range from Central Otago to North Otago. We then follow the Waitaki Valley past Kurow to Benmore dam. After lunch at Omarama, we cross the Omarama Saddle where you can view Mt Aoraki / Cook, and drive alongside the Manuhererika River back into Central Otago and your accommodation for the night (consider St Bathans, Cromwell, Clyde, Arrowtown, Queenstown).
OPTION SEVEN | Waikaia Bush Road
This is a big day. Starting early we head South to Lumsden and on to the small Southland township of Waikaia. From Waikaia we pass through stunning beech forest at Piano Flat beside the Waikaia river before the 4WD section starts. The Waikaia bush road climbs very steeply up to the tussock country. This track is not for beginners, it has extremely steep and narrow sections, rock steps and generally requires a good background in off roading. The rock steps require vehicles that have good entry and exit departure angles (Vehicles with low overhanging front or rear bumpers and tow-bars are not suitable for this trip). Once on the tops the countryside has commanding views over the Garvie and Umbrella mountains. Rock tors are a common feature in this landscape adding to the dramatic views. We have two main exit points for this trip, either the Obelisk and down to Alexandra, or extending on to Duffers saddle and Cromwell.
Due to safety with conditions, if it is wet or raining at Piano Flat we will not attempt this track.
